If you have started looking into engagement rings, you have probably already noticed how much the experience varies depending on where you go. Walk into a high street jeweller and you will find rows of display cases, a salesperson hovering nearby, and prices that seem hard to justify for something that looks almost identical to the ring next to it. Go online and you are met with a different problem: thousands of options, little guidance, and no real way of knowing whether what you are buying is worth what you are paying.
À Vie Diamonds was built as a direct response to both of those problems. Here is what we do differently, and why we think it matters.
We Design Every Ring From Scratch
Most jewellers, whether on the high street or online, are selling you something that already exists. You pick a style from a catalogue, choose a stone from a limited selection, and that is broadly it. The ring is made to a template.
We do not work that way. Every commission at À Vie Diamonds starts with a blank page and a conversation. We want to understand the person who will wear the ring, the occasion, the aesthetic they are drawn to, the budget they are working with, and the details that matter to them. From there, we build the design around those things, not around what we already have in stock.
The result is a ring that is genuinely specific to the two of you. Not a ring that happens to fit, but a ring that was built to.
Nothing Is Made Until You Approve It
This is one of the things we are most proud of, and it is something very few jewellers offer clearly and in writing.
Before any production begins, we send you photorealistic CAD renders of your ring. You can see exactly how it will look, the proportions, the setting, the stone placement, before a single piece of metal has been worked. If something is not quite right, we adjust it. Only once you have confirmed every detail in writing do we move to production.
For a purchase this significant, that level of control matters. You should know exactly what you are getting before you commit.
Our Diamonds Are Certified
Every stone we source comes with either a GIA (Gemological Institute of America) or IGI (International Gemological Institute) certificate. These are the two most trusted grading bodies in the world, and their certificates give you an independent, objective assessment of exactly what you are buying: the cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight of your stone, verified by experts with no stake in the sale.
We also adhere to the Kimberley Process, which means every natural diamond we source is certified as conflict-free.
When you buy a diamond without certification, you are taking someone's word for its quality. When you buy a certified stone, you have independent proof.
We Are Not a Shop. That Is a Good Thing.
À Vie Diamonds has no showroom, no physical retail location, no salaried sales team, and no high street overheads. It is Hamish and Jamie, the two of us, handling every commission from the first conversation to the moment your ring arrives.
That might sound like a limitation. In practice, it is the reason we can offer something genuinely bespoke at prices that would surprise you.
A traditional jeweller carries significant fixed costs: rent on a prime location, display cases, staff wages, insurance on stock, business rates. Those costs have to be recovered somewhere, and they are recovered in the price of what you buy. When you pay for a ring on the high street, a meaningful portion of what you are paying for is the shop itself.
We do not have any of that. What we have instead is an entirely online process, a network of specialist goldsmiths, and a direct relationship with our diamond suppliers. That structure means our clients consistently pay significantly less than they would expect for something completely bespoke, without any compromise on the quality of the stone, the setting, or the craftsmanship.
The Process, in Brief
A free consultation, certified stone options matched to your brief, a photorealistic CAD render for your approval, and production once you've confirmed every detail in writing. Most commissions complete in four to six weeks from approval. For the full stage-by-stage breakdown, including exactly when payment is due and what happens at each step, see our complete bespoke ring process guide.
We Are There Throughout, Not Just at the Sale
One of the things that gets lost in a traditional retail experience is what happens after the transaction. You buy the ring, you leave the shop, and that is often the end of the relationship.
We work differently because the nature of what we do means we are involved in something that matters to you. People come back to us for eternity rings, for anniversary pieces, for gifts. We run a referral scheme, £50 for anyone who introduces a client to us, because the majority of our new business comes from people who have had a good experience and told someone about it.
That kind of relationship only exists if we do good work and treat people well. It is the model we have built around.
Who We Are For
À Vie Diamonds is for people who want something that is genuinely theirs, designed around them, made to the highest standard, and priced honestly. We are particularly good for people who have looked at high street options and felt that nothing quite fits, or who assumed bespoke was out of their budget but are curious whether it has to be.
If that sounds like you, the best thing to do is get in touch. The consultation is free, there is no obligation, and the conversation tends to be a lot more straightforward than people expect.
