THE BASICS
Why choose a sapphire engagement ring?
Sapphire is the most practical coloured gemstone for most engagement rings, offering excellent hardness, strong colour and a wide range of design possibilities.
Sapphires score 9 on the Mohs scale, making them much more suitable for daily engagement-ring wear than many coloured gemstones. They are hard, durable and available in a broad colour range, from traditional royal blue to teal, pink, yellow, green, white, purple and parti-colour.
The appeal is not just colour. A sapphire can make a ring feel more personal, more heirloom-led or more individual than a diamond-only design. It can be used as the centre stone, side stones, a hidden detail or paired with a diamond in a toi et moi ring.
The best sapphire rings begin with the stone. Colour, tone, saturation, clarity, treatment and cut should be judged before the setting is finalised.
