The rings that started À Vie

A business built on friends, trust and unforgettable moments.

Before À Vie Diamonds reached clients around the world, it began with the people closest to us: friends asking for honest help, better diamonds, and rings that felt properly personal.

How it started

The first commissions came from trust, not advertising.

À Vie began in the most personal way possible: by helping friends make one of the biggest decisions of their lives. Jamie sourced the diamond for Joe's engagement ring, which became a bezel-set oval diamond ring for his now fiancee. From that first sale, the business grew through school friends, word of mouth, and the kind of trust that cannot be manufactured.

Those first rings still shape how we work today. Every commission deserves the same care as if it were being made for someone we know.

The founders

Two friends behind every commission

À Vie is deliberately small and personal. Clients work directly with Hamish and Jamie, from the first idea through stone sourcing, design decisions and final approval.

Co-founder

Jamie

Jamie is a co founder and director of À Vie Diamonds. Having originally studied Law, his route into jewellery was not an obvious one. It began when he helped supply a diamond for one of his best friends, an experience that allowed him to see the entire journey from the first conversation through to the finished engagement ring.

What stayed with Jamie most was not simply the diamond or the design, but the reaction it created. Seeing how happy his friend was, and how genuinely chuffed they were when they saw the ring in person for the first time, gave him a real appreciation for the emotional significance that jewellery can carry.

That experience encouraged Jamie to look more closely at the world of diamonds and bespoke jewellery. He quickly developed an affinity with the satisfaction that comes from helping someone create a piece that feels deeply personal and meaningful.

This became an important part of the idea behind À Vie Diamonds. Jamie wanted to help build a business that could offer clients personal attention, honest guidance and genuine excitement throughout the process, without making bespoke jewellery feel intimidating or unnecessarily complicated.

Today, Jamie spends much of his time working directly with clients, understanding what they want and helping turn their ideas into a finished piece. He works closely with gemstone suppliers, designers and manufacturers to find the right stones, refine each design and ensure that every detail reflects the client and the story behind the jewellery.

Jamie particularly enjoys the moment when a piece is finally completed and the client sees it in person for the first time. Whether it is an engagement ring, wedding band or another meaningful piece of jewellery, seeing someone’s reaction and knowing the work that went into creating that moment remains one of the most rewarding parts of À Vie Diamonds for him.

Outside the business, Jamie is an avid sportsman and reader who enjoys spending time with his friends and family.

Co-founder

Hamish

Hamish is a co-founder and director of À Vie Diamonds. He believes that buying bespoke jewellery should feel exciting, personal and transparent—not confusing, intimidating or burdened by unnecessary showroom costs.

With a background in mechanical engineering, Hamish was naturally drawn to the detail behind jewellery: how individual ideas become practical designs, how stones and settings work together, and how a carefully considered piece can be created around the person who will wear it. He also recognised that the traditional jewellery-buying process often leaves customers overwhelmed by jargon, uncertain about value and unsure whom to trust.

Much of Hamish’s work at À Vie Diamonds is focused on changing that experience. He built the company’s website and leads its brand, digital strategy, content, social media and business-development activity. He develops educational resources, customer journeys and digital tools intended to make choosing a diamond or commissioning a bespoke piece clearer and more approachable.

Hamish also works directly with clients, guiding them from their first message through initial ideas, budgeting, gemstone selection, design development, production and delivery. He particularly enjoys taking a collection of photographs, preferences and personal details and helping shape them into a piece of jewellery that feels genuinely individual.

Behind the scenes, Hamish works across supplier relationships, pricing, product data, technical specifications, marketing campaigns and the systems that allow À Vie Diamonds to provide a highly personal service without the overheads and conventions of a traditional high-street showroom.

For Hamish, À Vie Diamonds is not simply about selling jewellery. It is about giving more people the confidence, knowledge and personal support needed to create something meaningful.

First sale

Joe's bezel oval engagement ring

A bezel-set oval diamond engagement ring, built around the diamond Jamie sourced for Joe.

À Vie's first sale came through Joe. Jamie sourced the diamond he used in his now fiancee's ring, which was then made into a bezel oval diamond engagement ring.

It was the kind of first commission that set the tone: personal, considered, and built on trust rather than sales pressure.

A school friend

Oliver and Morgan's radiant diamond ring

One of the next meaningful commissions came from a best friend from school. We designed a 5ct radiant diamond engagement ring with a hidden halo and pave shank for Oliver Cuerden and Morgan, now his fiancee.

It was a serious ring, but still deeply personal: a piece made for someone we knew, with the care and attention that comes from that kind of connection.

A Regent's Park proposal

For James and Heloise, we created a 4ct oval diamond ring with ten varying sized side stones. James proposed in Regent's Park on a beautiful sunny morning in July.

Hamish had the pleasure of delivering the finished ring just a few days before. The first time James saw it, the smile on his face said everything. It is one of those moments that reminds us what the work is really for.

Where it has gone since

From friends of friends to clients around the world

Those early commissions led to more friends, then friends of friends, and eventually clients well beyond our immediate circle. The process remains personal: clear advice, certified stones, thoughtful design, and nothing made until the client is ready to approve it.
