The certificate does not travel with the diamond in any physical sense: it identifies a specific stone by its characteristics and, in most cases, by a laser-inscribed serial number on the girdle that can be checked against the certificate. If a stone is re-cut or damaged, the original certificate no longer applies.
GIA: The Gemological Institute of America
GIA was founded in 1931 and developed the international diamond grading standards (the 4Cs framework and the D-to-Z colour scale) that the industry now uses globally. It is a non-profit educational institution based in California and is widely considered the most rigorous and conservative of the major grading laboratories.
GIA grades are generally considered the most conservative in the industry, meaning a GIA-graded stone of a given specification may receive a slightly lower grade than the same stone graded by some other laboratories. This conservatism is generally seen as a virtue: a GIA G/VS2 is reliably a G/VS2.
GIA has historically been the dominant certification for natural diamonds and remains so. It began certifying lab-grown diamonds in 2020, using the same 4Cs methodology but issuing reports that clearly identify the stone as laboratory-grown.
IGI: The International Gemological Institute
IGI was founded in 1975 in Antwerp and now operates globally with grading laboratories in multiple countries. It has become the dominant certification body for lab-grown diamonds: the majority of lab-grown diamonds sold globally carry IGI certificates, which reflects both IGI's early adoption of lab-grown certification and its significant presence in the markets where lab-grown production is concentrated.
IGI grades are widely accepted and trusted. Some industry observers note that IGI grading has historically been slightly more generous than GIA grading at equivalent quality levels, though IGI has made significant efforts to standardise and tighten its grading in recent years. The practical implication for a buyer is modest: when comparing stones across certificates from different laboratories, buying on certificate grade alone without viewing the stone is less reliable than with a single laboratory standard.
Which Certificate Should You Choose
For natural diamonds, GIA is the industry standard and the most widely accepted certificate globally. A GIA-certified natural diamond is the most straightforward choice if provenance and resale value are considerations.
For lab-grown diamonds, IGI is the dominant and most widely used laboratory. The majority of lab-grown stones on the market carry IGI certificates, and IGI's familiarity with lab-grown production makes its grading well calibrated for these stones. GIA lab-grown certificates are available and equally valid, but less commonly encountered in practice.
For a buyer commissioning a bespoke engagement ring, the certificate laboratory matters less than the quality of the stone itself. Viewing the stone in person or via video, assessing its light performance, and buying from a maker who sources carefully is more important than whether the certificate says GIA or IGI at the top.
Other Laboratories
Other laboratories including HRD (Antwerp), EGL (European Gemological Laboratory), and various regional bodies also issue diamond certificates. These are not consistently equivalent to GIA or IGI standards and are generally considered less reliable for international trade.
