Diamond Colour Chart: What the Grades Actually Mean

Diamond colour is one of the four factors used to grade and price diamonds, alongside cut, clarity, and carat weight. The grading scale runs from D at the top, representing a completely colourless stone, through to Z, at which point the stone has a clearly visible yellow or brown tint. Most buyers encounter the scale for the first time when they see it on a grading certificate and have no reference for what the differences actually look like. The practical answer, for most engagement ring purchasers, is that the differences between adjacent grades are extremely subtle and that the sweet spot for value sits well below the top of the scale.

TL;DR: The GIA and IGI diamond colour scale runs from D (colourless) to Z (visibly tinted). The visible difference between adjacent grades is minimal. The colour grading system assesses diamonds face-down against a white background under controlled lighting, using a set of master comparison stones as reference. Under these conditions, a trained grader can reliably distinguish D from E, and E from F. In a mounted ring, viewed face-up in normal lighting, the same differences are essentially invisible.

This is not a knock against the grading system, which serves an important standardisation function. It is simply a practical observation that the price premium for moving from G to F, or from F to E, is not reflected in any visible improvement in the appearance of the ring as it is actually worn.

Round brilliants are among the most forgiving shapes for colour because the brilliant faceting disperses and masks any warmth in the stone effectively. G or H in a round brilliant in white metal gives a clean, bright appearance for most buyers.

Fancy Colour Diamonds

The D to Z scale applies only to white diamonds. The scale assesses colour as a negative quality factor: the less colour, the higher the grade. Fancy colour diamonds, which include vivid yellows, pinks, blues, greens, and other saturated colours, are graded on a completely separate scale where more intense colour is a positive quality factor. Fancy colour diamonds are rare, striking, and priced entirely differently from the D to Z scale stones.

Lab-grown fancy colour diamonds are considerably more accessible than their natural equivalents.
