Every love story is unique. And so is every diamond.
At À Vie Diamonds, we believe an engagement ring should hold more than brilliance — it should hold meaning, integrity, and a story worth telling. In this piece, we trace the journey of a diamond from its origins to the moment it becomes a symbol of your love.
The beginning: formation over billions of years
Natural diamonds were formed deep within the Earth's mantle, under immense heat and pressure, over billions of years. Carbon atoms arranged themselves into the crystal structure we recognise as diamond — the hardest naturally occurring substance on Earth. Volcanic activity then carried these crystals closer to the surface, where they eventually became accessible to mining.
Lab-grown diamonds follow a different path: created in controlled environments using either High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) or Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) processes, they replicate the conditions of natural diamond formation in a matter of weeks. The result is chemically, physically, and optically identical to a natural diamond.
The cutting and grading process
Once a rough diamond is recovered, it is assessed for its potential. A skilled diamond cutter plans the cut to maximise the stone's beauty — balancing carat yield with the proportions needed for brilliance. The cutting process can take days for a single stone. Each facet is placed with precision to direct light through the diamond in the way that produces maximum sparkle.
After cutting, the stone is sent to an independent grading laboratory — most commonly GIA or IGI — where gemologists assess it against the four Cs: cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight. The resulting certificate is a permanent record of that stone's characteristics and is the basis on which it is priced and sold.
From stone to setting
A certified diamond then enters the hands of a jeweller. At À Vie, this is where the bespoke process begins in earnest. We source stones that match your brief — the right shape, the right grade, the right balance of size and quality for your budget — and present them to you before any commitment is made.
The setting is then designed around your chosen stone. Every proportion decision — band width, setting height, prong style, metal — is made with that specific stone in mind. You see the full design before anything is made. Nothing is cast, set, or finished until you have approved it.
The moment it becomes yours
The finished ring is inspected, photographed, and packaged before it makes its way to you. From that point, the diamond's journey — whether it began billions of years ago in the Earth's mantle or weeks ago in a controlled laboratory — ends where it was always meant to: as a symbol of something that lasts.
