Carat weight tells you how much a diamond weighs. It does not tell you how large it looks from above, how brilliant it is, or how it will appear in a ring. What a Carat Measures

One metric carat equals exactly 0.2 grams. The carat system was standardised internationally in 1907. Carats are divided into 100 points: a 0.50ct diamond is 50 points, a 0.75ct diamond is 75 points, and so on. The term point is used in the trade when discussing fractions of a carat, so a jeweller might refer to a stone as a fifty pointer rather than 0.50ct.

Carat weight is measured on a precision scale and is the most objectively verifiable of the four Cs. The certificate figure is accurate. What it does not predict is how the stone looks in a ring, which depends on several other factors.

These are approximate figures based on well-cut stones at standard proportions. Actual dimensions vary with cut depth and individual stone proportions. A deeply cut stone of a given carat weight will have a smaller face-up diameter than a well-spread stone at the same weight.

Why Elongated Shapes Present Larger

Oval, pear, marquise, and emerald cut diamonds present larger face-up than round brilliants of the same carat weight because their surface area is distributed over a wider footprint. A 1ct oval at approximately 8.0 x 5.5mm has more visible surface area than a 1ct round brilliant at 6.5mm diameter. How Cut Quality Affects Apparent Size

Two diamonds of identical carat weight can look different sizes in a ring because of cut quality and depth proportions. A diamond cut with an ideal depth percentage (59 to 62.5 per cent for a round brilliant) distributes its weight across a wide face-up diameter. A deep stone, with a depth percentage above 64 per cent, carries more of its weight in the base and looks smaller from above for the same carat weight.

A poorly cut stone that appears larger than a well-cut stone of the same weight will also be less brilliant because the deeper pavilion causes light to leak rather than return through the crown. Diamond pricing increases disproportionately at whole carat thresholds: 0.50ct, 1.00ct, 1.50ct, 2.00ct, and 3.00ct. A 0.98ct diamond costs meaningfully less per carat than a 1.00ct diamond, despite the face-up size difference being completely imperceptible.
